Wild winter run steelhead are truly a creature that amazes me every time I am blessed with the chance to encounter one. Steelhead come in two varieties, summer run and winter run. Summer run fish come in from June through November or even December. They are immature and spend months in the river maturing before spawning in the spring and heading back to the ocean. I liken summer steelhead to the sophomore junior varsity football team. Winter run steelhead do not enter the rivers till the coldest time of the year. You can start to see them showing in December but the numbers really don't go up until April when they spawn. Winter run fish are fully mature when they enter the river. They are big, they are strong, and they will steal your heart. They truly are the senior captain of the football team. They command your attention and will leave you in a pile of weak kneed pain, if you don't bring your "A" game.
