Giving When Giving is Needed (The Chad Brown Way)
I learned a lot about Chad Brown on that trip. A Navy veteran, and a man that has a passion for helping others. He was just starting his own company Soul River Inc. and had a lot of great ideas. We laughed and fished and bonded on that trip. We both had a drive in us to give back to two groups that made us what we are today, at risk youth, and veterans. I have donated a lot of time to Chad's work with these two groups over the years. Coming from a rough childhood and escaping in the military was my background, and I wish I had a Chad Brown when I was a child.
Fast forward to 2014 and I was so happy to help Chad again with his first "Anglers Quest" on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. This was an opportunity for 18 youth from the inner city to spend a long weekend learning about one of the great places we have in our country. Chad was able to connect these youth with the environment and with veterans through the art of fly fishing. We taught the kids entomology, casting, wilderness safety. In turn us veterans felt a sense of purpose and higher cause that we have not felt in a long time. A truly life changing weekend for everyone involved.
Later that year I was so happy to hear that Chad was going to be presented with probably one of the most important awards in fly fishing. Orvis searched the world over, for individuals that are making a difference in the world. They present them with their Breaking Barriers Award. Chad was one of the people that were given this award for 2014. This was sort of a watershed moment for Chad and his efforts. Shortly after that he spoke in front of Congress and from there the breaks came off. His meteoric rise in not only the fly fishing community but also the philanthropic community, is something to see.
